We’re excited to co-host a public snow and avalanche workshop with Avalanche Canada on Wednesday, September 30th, 2026. This public day will provide an opportunity for the wider community to get involved in the ISSW, and explore the science and practice of snow and avalanche safety.
This event invites the public to engage with members of the professional avalanche community in dynamic discussions and informative presentations.
Who Can Attend
The public day is open to all members of the public, regardless of experience, backcountry travel method, or skill level. It’s an ideal opportunity to broaden your backcountry horizons and learn from the experts in the field.
What You’ll Experience
The public day will present a mixture of different perspectives on avalanche safety. Short sessions will allow for a variety of presentation topics relevant to recreation in the backcountry and how we stay safer when we travel through the mountains. As well as the opportunity to hear experts present, there will also be opportunities to ask questions and engage with presenters.
The technical poster presentations from the professional conference will be available during the public day, offering a peek into the research happening in the professional snow safety world. These posters delve into a wide range of topics and showcase the latest ideas about snow and avalanche safety.
We will also have interactive booths and industry exhibitors available for hands-on exploration of different technologies and products that are available to improve public avalanche safety.
What You’ll Learn
Expect to experience personal tales of the impact of avalanche accidents, learn tips and techniques that the experts use, and uncover what we need to understand to make better decisions in the mountains.
Want to Present?
We are inviting educators, guides, avalanche survivors, researchers, patrollers, forecasters, storytellers, and anyone involved in snow safety to apply to present on public day. If you or your organization have something to share that is engaging, educational, and accessible to the public, this is an ideal opportunity for you. It’s a chance to add value to the local community and share the knowledge that comes with a career in the snow.
Presentations can take a variety of forms, from traditional technical talks, to story telling, to visuals.
Sessions will be 10 to 20 minutes, with Q&A where possible. Visual and interactive presentations are encouraged. We have limited space, so proposals will be selected based on fit and suitability of messaging.
