WORKSHOP: Bringing Snowpack Modelling into Operations with AvaCollabra

  • Aava Hotel (Summit Room A) 4005 Whistler Way Whistler, BC, V8E 1J1 Canada (map)

Snowpack models are becoming more accurate, accessible, and relevant to avalanche forecasting. AvaCollabra (avacollabra.org) is a collaborative network of researchers and practitioners working to integrate these tools into operations. This workshop will begin with a discussion on the current state of snowpack modelling in forecasting, followed by breakout sessions:

  • Operational focus: Practical considerations for forecasters, with examples of how to use and interpret models in daily workflows—valuable for those involved in operations or shaping the future of forecasting.

  • Technical focus: A deep dive into current software tools, including open-source platforms such as xsnow, AWSOME, and SNOWPACK.

Additional breakout groups may be added based on participant interest and relevance.

Organizer: Simon Horton, Avalanche Canada, shorton@avalanche.ca
